Illuminating knowledge otherwise obscured. Imagining possibilities beyond survival.
The Endarkened Futures Lab for Healing & Liberation (EnFL) (pronounced en-full) is an interdisciplinary research, creative inquiry, and praxis lab founded and directed by Dr. Dora Watkins at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Grounded in Black feminist ways of knowing and drawing across the humanities, arts, and philosophy, EnFL explores questions of resilience, embodiment, healing, knowledge, creativity, and human possibility. We investigate the conditions through which individuals and communities navigate adversity and demands for adaptation while creating possibilities for healing, thriving, transformation, and liberation.
EnFL is interested in what becomes visible when forms of knowledge too often overlooked, devalued, or obscured are taken seriously. We attend to knowledge carried through bodies, lived experience, story, memory, relationship, creativity, culture, and collective life, not simply as sources of information, but as consequential ways through which people understand, theorize, create, and transform their worlds.
Our work crosses disciplinary and methodological boundaries, bringing empirical research into conversation with theoretical inquiry, arts-informed and creative scholarship, collaborative knowledge production, and emerging approaches to understanding embodied experience.
Critical Resilience & Human Adaptation
We examine resilience beyond conventional narratives of overcoming adversity, asking what people and communities are required to survive, what adaptation makes possible, and what it may cost. Our work is particularly concerned with possibilities beyond compulsory endurance toward healing and thriving.
Embodiment, Stress & Healing
We explore the body as a site of experience, memory, adaptation, knowledge, and possibility. This work considers how embodied experience can deepen understandings of stress, resilience, healing, and human flourishing.
Arts, Story & Creative Knowledge
We approach art, story, testimony, and creative practice as more than expression. They can also function as forms of inquiry, theorizing, meaning-making, and knowledge production.
Relational & Collective Knowing
We investigate how knowledge emerges through relationship, dialogue, culture, community, and collective life, with particular attention to the conditions that make different forms of knowing possible.
Across these areas, EnFL is animated by enduring questions of healing, thriving, transformation, and liberation.
EnFL is intentionally interdisciplinary and methodologically expansive.
Our work may include qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, community-engaged, participatory, arts-informed, and embodied approaches, alongside theoretical and conceptual scholarship. As the Lab grows, emerging projects will also explore new methodological possibilities and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Rather than privileging a single way of knowing, we ask which forms of inquiry allow us to see what might otherwise remain obscured.
EnFL serves as a home for research and creative inquiry emerging from Dr. Watkins' broader scholarly program and for new collaborative projects developed through the Lab.
Current and emerging areas include critical resilience and resilience measurement; embodied experiences of stress and adaptation; Black women's knowledge and lived experience; healing and thriving beyond survival; arts-informed and expressive inquiry; relational and collective knowledge production; and interdisciplinary approaches to studying human adaptation and possibility.
EnFL brings together undergraduate and graduate students, faculty collaborators, artists, community partners, and other thinkers and makers whose work intersects with the Lab's questions.
Students participate not simply as research assistants, but as emerging researchers, thinkers, makers, and knowledge producers.
Research from EnFL and its affiliated scholars contributes to conversations across resilience, psychosocial development, Black feminist scholarship, arts-informed inquiry, trauma and healing, human development, and interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge production.
The Endarkened Futures Lab for Healing & Liberation is housed within The Healing Project, the broader intellectual home for Dr. Watkins' scholarship, teaching and praxis, creative inquiry, and community-engaged work.
EnFL provides a dedicated space for collaborative research, creative inquiry, student scholarship, and the development of new questions and possibilities.
EnFL welcomes opportunities for collaboration with students, scholars, artists, practitioners, and community partners whose work resonates with the Lab's areas of inquiry.
