POEMS, FRAGMENTS, creative Works

I think, dream aloud, reflect, comprehend, and conceptualize through poetry and the spoken word, my chosen medium. For me, poetry is deeply political and has never existed apart from thinking. Sometimes it gives language to what I understand but cannot yet explain, sometimes a poem arrives before I know what I am trying to say, and other times, it lets me remain with contradiction, memory, feeling, or a question without requiring that I resolve it too quickly.

The work gathered here spans different moments in my life and scholarship. Some pieces were written years before I had the theoretical language I carry now. I have chosen to keep them because I do not believe everything we know arrives first as theory, or that everything worth knowing must eventually become an argument.

These are poems, spoken words, fragments, and other creative works through which I have been thinking, becoming, and making sense of the worlds within and around me.

i.

my heart is stronger than my body

but my body is always on display

ii.

it works for me because

memory can be debilitating

iii.

i've always been a disrupter

even while paralyzed

and i think that's worth discussing.

inferno

i had a dream that everything burned but the house

the wicked material wouldn’t succumb to the flames

steel ceilings hung over my head

precious metals held the weight under my feet

inside, the only thing burning was me

it’s lonely in the flame so,

if you can’t take the heat get out of your head

quick

before your hair catches fire

your crown

your glory

wrapped in haze and the pungent smoke

my lungs refused to let air in

my breath refused to push poison out

inflammation is a tricky beast

the swelling won’t go down

my forehead is filled with lumps

knots levitating from yeast

Like a buttery pretzel in the oven with no salt because I have high blood pressure

but against my Black skin the welts aren’t visible

especially when you look in the dark with your eyes open

turn the lights on

close your eyes

sparks from the gas line created a buzz

the flames created a boom

everything had blew up in my face.
